Abstract

Citizens of developed countries enjoy the right to a healthy environment, unlike in Nigeria where the right to a healthy environment is largely non-justiciable. Waste disposal poses a serious problem in the country. Across Nigeria, heaps of unmanaged waste can be seen in markets, residential areas, and waterways, causing enormous harm to the environment and public health. This research examines waste disposal and management in Nigeria and analyses the challenges hindering the achievement of a clean and healthy environment. The study adopts a doctrinal methodology, relying on statutes regulating waste disposal and management in Nigeria, as well as relevant international conventions and treaties. The research recommends a review of existing waste disposal and environmental protection laws with a view to strengthening penal sanctions. It also advocates increased public participation in environmental sanitation to ensure more effective environmental protection and sustainable waste management practices.
