Abstract

This paper critically examines the challenges confronting the doctrine of separation of powers within Nigeria’s contemporary political landscape. The doctrine has faced significant challenges, including executive overreach, corruption, and inadequate institutional checks and balances. The paper examines the nature and extent of these challenges, their underlying causes, and their implications for democratic governance in Nigeria. Employing the doctrinal research method, the study identifies weaknesses within Nigeria’s existing system of separation of powers and highlights the urgent need for institutional and constitutional reforms. The paper recommends constitutional reforms, institutional strengthening, and capacity building as measures to enhance the effectiveness of the doctrine of separation of powers and promote accountability, transparency, and good governance in Nigeria.
