THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION, LABOUR STANDARDS AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This paper examines the role of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in regulating and promoting equitable industrial relations within the global labour framework. Using a doctrinal research methodology through examination of relevant statutes and instruments, which are consistent with the study, the analysis examines relevant ILO Conventions, Recommendations, and supervisory mechanisms in shaping national labour laws and industrial policies. The paper finds that the ILO plays a significant role in addressing industrial disputes, promoting collective bargaining, safeguarding workers’ rights, and influencing labour legislation across member states, including Nigeria. The paper recommends strengthening the domestication of ILO Standards, improving enforcement mechanisms, and enhancing capacity building and awareness, among others.
